| Notes |
| Every year I have at least one album on my top ten that I get flack for…this year that will probably be Collective Soul. Those of you wincing or shaking your heads probably haven’t listened to this record. It’s easily their best and most consistent. I have always liked Collective Soul, they usually have 2 or 3 really good songs on each release, but Afterwords is different...almost every song is a hook-filled hit. They’ve grown and matured and they’re also having more fun on this one. From the Cars influenced “Hollywood” to beautiful pop of “Bearing Witness.” If you want to score “hip” points with your elitist friends put Spoon and Arcade Fire in your top ten, but if you want to be real and support great pop/rock with incredible melodies, vocals and arrangements give Collective Soul a shot. Watch out though...it contains some positive uplifting lyrics and a few songs even sound like the band is happy...that's a real turn off for some of you I'm sure (you know who you are) and sure critical death in this day and age, but for that reason alone I want it in my top ten. It's so refreshing after hearing so many dark, depressing releases. |
